Apple’s unsightly solution to house the front facing camera and sensors on its nearly bezel-less iPhone X has taken the Android smartphone ecosystem by storm and even though some manufacturers have come up with innovative solutions to tackle the same problem, the notch is now a staple on most Android smartphones. Having a notch on a smartphone does offer one of the simplest solutions to house the front facing camera and sensors but it comes with its own fair share of issues. The most problematic issue of all is that the notch interferes with some UI elements in full-screen apps and games, and those of you who play PUBG Mobile on your notched smartphone will know exactly what I’m talking about. In case you’re looking for a solution to your woes, here’s how to optimize PUBG Mobile for notched phones:
Optimize PUBG Mobile for Notched Phones
Notches come in various shapes and sizes, making it quite difficult for PUBG Mobile developers to customize the game’s UI according to all the different notch styles. To tackle this issue PUBG Mobile recently received a special toggle to optimize the game for notched displays, making it easier for users with a notched smartphone to optimize the game’s UI in accordance with their smartphone’s design. Here’s how you can make use of the setting to optimize PUBG Mobile for your smartphone’s notch:
In order to optimize PUBG Mobile for notched display, you’ll need to open up the settings menu by tapping on the cog in the bottom right corner of the game lobby.
Now, tap on the ‘Graphics’ tab in the settings menu and scroll down to locate the new ‘Non-Standard Screens’ option. Do note that the new setting isn’t available on all smartphones yet. For example, when checked on the OnePlus 6, the game doesn’t display the option and automatically moves the entire game to the right, leaving an unsightly black bar in its wake. However, on some other phones, including the OnePlus 5, and the OnePlus 5T, the feature was visible so it should come to your phone soon.
The option is set to ‘Normal’ by default and depending on the device you’re using, you can select either the ‘Rounded Corners’ option or the ‘Notched’ option. After selecting the appropriate setting, click on the yellow ‘OK’ buttonin the bottom right corner.
The game will now show you a pop-up saying ‘New settings have been applied. Reduce the frame rate if it fluctuates’. Tap on ‘OK’ and restart the game for the settings to take effect.
Upon restarting the game you’ll notice that the UI elements have been moved slightly inward, which will ensure that the notch doesn’t interfere with any buttons in the game (see attached screenshot for comparison). The setting moves UI elements on both the left and right side of the game.
Left: Normal UI, Right: UI Optimized for Notch
Well, that’s about it! You have successfully optimized PUBG Mobile for your notched display. You can now enjoy the game without worrying about the notch getting in the way. The ‘Rounded Corners’ setting has a similar effect and moves the UI elements slightly inward to prevent your display’s rounded corners from cutting into the UI elements.
